Madonna di Campiglio, the world-famous capital of Trentino tourism, is situated 1,550 m. above sea level, between the Brenta Dolomites (a UNESCO natural heritage site) and the Adamello and Presanella glaciers.

Founded almost a thousand years ago as a monastery and hospice for pilgrims, Campiglio was launched as a tourist centre in the second half of the 1800s by Giovanni Battista Righi, and soon became a favoured destination of Central Europe and Italy’s nobility and upper-middle classes. Its most illustrious guests were Emperor Francesco Giuseppe and his consort, Empress Elisabetta “Sissi”, in 1889 and 1894. The glories of that period are remembered today thanks to the “Campiglio Asburgica” committee, which offers tourists pageants and shows in summer and in winter during the carnival period.

What to do in summer?

In summer tourists have a number of high quality options, thanks to the combination of a wonderful natural environment and cultural and entertainment activities organised for adults and children. Just a few steps outside the town it’s possible to see magnificent landscapes, with lakes, valleys, alpine farms and mountain huts.
You can follow classic Alpine routes and the nearby Adamello Brenta National park offers 450 Km of mountain paths for all trekking and mountain-bike enthusiasts.
The summer tourist will also find a piece of golfing history in Continental Europe, thanks to the Carlo Magno Golf Club, with a 9-hole course open from July to the end of September, designed in 1923 by the Englishman Henry Cotton. It’s the golf course at the highest altitude in Europe (1680 m. above sea level).

What to do the winter?

In winter, Campiglio becomes the queen of winter sports, with the possibility of covering innumerable kilometres of ski runs up to an altitude of 2.600 m., starting from the centre and returning with the skis still on your feet. The runs are all different, according to levels of ability.
Today the Ski Area has 57 ski-lifts and includes 150 Km of runs. Thanks to the link to Pinzolo and Folgarida (again keeping the skis on your feet), Campiglio has further extended its offer to the more demanding skiers.
The range of winter sports is completed with cross-country ski routes and ice-skating on the town’s lake.
In the winter season the town is a fashionable entertainment centre for all those who, besides sport, love to enjoy themselves with taste and elegance.
